Small & Mighty: The Rise Of Smaller Purpose-Led Events
In today’s tough economic climate, it’s no secret that many businesses are cutting their cloth accordingly. But what does this mean for companies who still desire to run great events to drive competitive advantage in the marketplace? Budget scrutiny across companies is not going away: but that doesn’t mean fewer events. It means smarter ones. Smaller purpose-led events are coming to the fore, and bigger events aren’t always winning any more.
Why This Matters
Events without clearly defined objectives are increasingly being deprioritised in budgets, with KPIs like engagement, learning outcomes and brand impact being used more consistently across the events world to measure success. Attendees and stakeholders expect a clearly defined reason for every gathering, and venues, formats and suppliers that can’t flex to this shift are missing out on the small, high-impact, high-focus briefs. For many companies, investment is being channelled into events that prioritise smaller invite lists and higher investment per head.
The Evidence
92% events in 2025 had under 100 attendees, and 84% had fewer than 50 participants (Lyyti, Event Trends 2026). Meetings are also shrinking, with average guest numbers per meeting falling by 67% year on year, whilst average spend per guest rose 59%. Award Ceremonies are also the fastest-growing corporate event type in 2026, with enquiries up 57% and event value up 50% year on year (VenueScanner, 2026 Event Trends). Smaller groups with bigger spends per head are driving more intimate events with more intention behind them.
Our Perspective
Focused investment in ‘small but mighty’ purpose-led events has become a competitive advantage to ensure relevance and quality. The question isn’t how many people you can fit in a room – it’s whether every individual needs to be there and why. Once you’ve got the guestlist, it’s considering how you can make the experience so amazing that the outcomes each event delivers for your business will give you a competitive advantage and help you grow.
